How do Rockford residents prepare for the Holiday season?

Are you hosting holidays at your house? Is your Rockford house too small for all of your guests? Maybe good idea would be selling it and upgrading for a bigger one. Modern Times Homes is here to help you sell your house

How many of you are feeling like winter is almost here? Every time October hits the calendar I feel like Halloween is here, Thanksgiving is just a few days away… and Christmas and New Years are just around the corner.

I love the holiday season but sometimes I just get exhausted having to prepare everything, and then clean it, and then do it all over again. But other than that it’s a wonderful time to gather together with our family around the table and just enjoy our company.

While I am shopping for holiday stuff I feel like the stores are changing decorations daily: one day there is Halloween, next day it’s Thanksgiving, and the next day there are Christmas decorations all over. It is all beautiful and I enjoy admiring it but sometimes I just wish time would slow down.

How do you prepare for Holidays? Do you buy a lot of decorations? Do you host family dinners at home or do you go out to eat?

We usually host Thanksgiving at our house and Christmas at my sister’s house. Sometimes we switch those two in between us. It doesn’t matter if we host it at our house or my sister’s, we still prepare everything together. We cook ,bake and set up the table for guests together. I love when we do that because it makes me enjoy holidays even more because we spend more time together and all the aromatic smell from cooking just makes us so happy. I also love to put Christmas songs to play while we do that to put us in the Christmas spirit.

Each year we have around 25 people for Christmas and Thanksgiving. It sounds fun but sometimes I get exhausted thinking how I will fit them all together. We always have to add folding tables and I usually borrow chairs from my sister. I wish I had a formal dining room with this many seats, it would definitely save hassle when setting up.

Another thing that comes to my head when I think about Christmas is snow, brrr. I am definitely a beach, palm tree and ocean person but here in Rockford could get pretty cold and snowy during winter. I don’t really like that, but it is nice to have some snow for Christmas. I love white holidays, plus kids love to play in the snow. How about you? Do you like winter or summer better?

What I have learned in the last couple of years is that an attached garage to our home is the best thing ever. I would never ever change it to detached or no garage. Every time it is raining or snowing we don’t have to worry about getting wet while getting to the car. Even our kids say that we are lucky to have an attached garage. I love it especially during winter when I drop off and pick up kids from school, I don’t really have to get dressed. Just put my flip flops on and go. Another advantage of having a garage is that you never have to worry about getting the snow off from the car. It takes a lot of time especially in the morning when you are rushing to work or school. What about you, do you prefer attached or detached garage, maybe no garage at all?

While we still have warm weather in Rockford Illinois it is a good idea to start thinking about preparing your house for winter. Do some closets, garage, shed’s organizations. Put inside, or at least cover everything you don’t want to leave outside to get destroyed. Brr I am getting cold writing about this season, but before we know it we will be back in spring again. Think about all the tools you need when the winter hits. Do you have a shovel that works properly? Are you planning to use a shovel when getting snow off your driveway and sidewalks, or maybe it would be a good idea to invest money into a snow blower? These machines are pretty expensive but they save a lot of time and energy, especially here in Illinois where winters could be rough. Maybe you should buy a couple of bags of snow salt to keep the area safe when walking. Personally, we do not use snow salt on driveways because they ruin concrete over time, but we have to remember to shovel it well each time. Nothing , not even a small spot of snow, should be left because when it freezes it is dangerous; easy to slip, fall and break a hand or leg.

Also, remember to check other things before winter, such as your heater. Is it working properly? Maybe have a professional come check it for you. You don’t want to find out during winter that your heater is not working, you will be cold and uncomfortable, and you should never feel that way in your own house. Check all the doors and windows for proper insulation. You don’t want to sit in your living room watching a movie, and feel the cold air coming in through the windows. If you have a fireplace in your house, it would also be a good idea to check the chimney before you start using it. Don’t forget to cut some wood and pile it up to have for your fireplace. Fireplaces, both real and electric, are my favorite for long winter evenings. You can just sit on your couch for hours and admire the fire.
